The contradictory Chinese media in the name of “socialism with Chinese characteristics”

    Get PDF
For the past 30 years, the Chinese communication system has experienced tremendous changes, which have brought it from the ultimate propaganda machine to a striking contradictory mix of capitalist neoliberalism and socialist authoritarian ideological indoctrination. Since the central hypothesis of my research focuses on the fact that socialist Chinese media are undergoing capitalist neoliberal operations, the American communication system, a very typical capitalist neoliberal corporate media system, is contextualized. The thesis intends to explore the current Chinese communication system, media phenomena, and media practices that have manifested contradictions. I also attempt to find out the underlying drive to propel the historical transformation of the Chinese media. I will employ political economy of communication to theorize and ground my research. In order to lend further support to my argument, I will delineate a case study: Xinwen Lianbo, a national news program on China Central Television (CCTV). Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) will be used to investigate the TV news discourse- \u27Xinwen Lianbo\u27

A multicomponent assembly approach for the design of deep desulfurization heterogeneous catalysts

Deep desulfurization is a challenging task and global efforts are focused on the development of new approaches for the reduction of sulfur-containing compounds in fuel oils. In this work, we have proposed a new design strategy for the development of deep desulfurization heterogeneous catalysts. Based on the adopted design strategy, a novel composite material of polyoxometalate (POM)-based ionic liquid-grafted layered double hydroxides (LDHs) was synthesized by an exfoliation/grafting/assembly process. The structural properties of the as-prepared catalyst were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, TG, NMR, XPS, BET, SEM and HRTEM. The heterogeneous catalyst exhibited high activity in deep desulfurization of DBT (dibenzothiophene), 4,6-DMDBT (4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene) and BT (benzothiophene) at 70 °C in 25, 30 and 40 minutes, respectively. The catalyst can be easily recovered and reused at least ten times without obvious decrease of its catalytic activity. Such excellent sulfur removal ability as well as the cost efficiency of the novel heterogeneous catalyst can be attributed to the rational design, where the spatial proximity of the substrate and the active sites, the immobilization of ionic liquid onto the LDHs via covalent bonding and the recyclability of the catalyst are carefully considered

A General Total Variation Minimization Theorem for Compressed Sensing Based Interior Tomography

    Get PDF
Recently, in the compressed sensing framework we found that a two-dimensional interior region-of-interest (ROI) can be exactly reconstructed via the total variation minimization if the ROI is piecewise constant (Yu and Wang, 2009). Here we present a general theorem charactering a minimization property for a piecewise constant function defined on a domain in any dimension. Our major mathematical tool to prove this result is functional analysis without involving the Dirac delta function, which was heuristically used by Yu and Wang (2009)

MVNC: A Multiview Network Computer Architecture

    Get PDF
In this paper, MVNC, a multiview network computer system for a high usability thin-client computing environment, is introduced. MVNC uses a revised SBC model to offer a new framework for thin client computing. MVNC can be used as a full functional Windows machine, or used as a Linux workstation, or a~graphic terminal. Its multiview work style is achieved by the attempts on GUI seamless integration technology, device integration technology and local video playback support. MVNC is implemented in an embedded Linux environment using a MIPS-4KC microprocessor. Test results on video application show that MVNC system uses its client hardware more efficiently and the load of MVNC server is lightened

Morphological and Molecular Characterization of \u3ci\u3eGracilacus wuae\u3c/i\u3e n. sp. (Nematoda: Criconematoidea) Associated with Cow Parsnip (\u3ci\u3eHeracleum maximum\u3c/i\u3e) in Ontario, Canada

Gracilacus wuae n. sp. from soil associated with cow parsnip in Ontario, Canada is described and illustrated. Morphologically, females have a long stylet ranging from 80 to 93 mmlong, the lip region not offset from the body contour, without lateral lips but with large and flat submedian lobes, the mouth opening slit-like elongated laterally and surrounded by lateral flaps, the excretory pore is anterior to the knobs of the stylet; males without stylet and the pharynx degenerated. The fourth-stage juveniles lack a stylet, the pharynx degenerated, and can be differentiated into preadult females and males based on the position of the genital primordia. The third-stage juveniles are similar to females but smaller. Phylogenetic studies using the rDNA small subunit 18S, large subunit 28S D2/D3, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences collectively provide evidence of a grouping with other Gracilacus and some species of Paratylenchus with stylet length of females longer than 41 mm deposited in GenBank

Research of Variable Volume and Gas Injection DC Inverter Air Conditioning Compressor

    Get PDF
With the wide promotion of energy saving and environmental protection, the improvement of heating capacity especially at low ambient temperature condition and the working efficiency of room air conditioner become more and more important. Firstly, the purpose of this paper was introduced. Then, the relative techniques like DC inverter, variable volume and gas injection were simply analyzed. Thirdly, a new coupling compressor with these three techniques to satisfy both heating capacity and efficiency demands was indicated. Moreover, the detail design of the coupling compressor was described. At last, the prototype compressor was designed and assembled to validate the effect of this coupling compressor on RAC system. According to the test result, this coupling compressor has significant effect as we expectation when using in RAC system. The maximum heating capacity increasing up to 185% by compare to the base system at -15℃ ambient temperature condition which makes half time consumption at the same room temperature rising. Furthermore, the APF efficiency of the system increased by about 6%

In this paper, Shanghai saturated soft soil is modeled as a two-phase porous media system consisting of solid and fluid phases. On the basis of resonant column test and dynamic triaxial test data of Shanghai saturated soft soil, the dynamic calculation model including a set of relationships of stress, strain, and pore water pressure and earthquake subsidence is developed to compute the seismic response of soil. The procedure to identify soil constants for the dynamic calculation model is also reported in detail. Subsequently, a dynamic effective stress analysis with the finite element method has been recommended to predict the seismic response of soil. Finally, the developed dynamic calculation model together with the dynamic effective stress analysis is utilized to predict the seismic response of Shanghai soil strata through the finite element method and some valuable conclusions are obtained from the results
